we're talking about stuff we like
Slice Gang is a collective of ATX DJs that have been together for some years now, killing it on a weekly basis and solo killing it opening for huge name artists much more frequently. It wasn't long into their set that I realized exactly what was happening.
It was a group of friends. Doing what they love. Having fun. These DJs were just having fun with their friends and this fun just so happened to be taking place on a stage in front of a thousand people at a festival. Zeke & Zoid were getting the crowd pumped up while Gamma was on the decks. The crowd was so rowdy for it being only 3pm at the first set of the last day of a festival.
The Texas-native and world famous DJ, Crizzly, was the said "lead" of Slice Gang. Roughly two years ago he rounded up his friends to start a weekly party in Austin and have since been bringing in special guests you would never get to see in such an intimate environment anywhere else. We're talking bangers. Flosstradamus. Loudpvck. IloveMakonnen. Getter.
These festival kids had no idea. I had no idea that you could see these extremely popular DJs on a weekly basis FOR FREE in such an intimate setting. But these small sets is how the word was spread about LIFTED since the beginning. It was something you had to experience for yourself to understand why it was so special and why you would want to be apart of the weekly function.
Unfortunately, this week it was put on hold. For the first time in years, it was postponed against any member's wishes.
Here's what Crizzly had to say about it himself:
"I’m gonna start this off by saying Lifted is NOT happening this week and is currently postponed until further notice. The rest of this post is for your reading pleasure and also if you care to know what has happened + what is happening. <3
We started throwing LIFTED ATX about 2 years ago. The goal is to bring the Austin scene closer together by having a free party every week where we can all hang out and vibe to the music we love. I tour all the time and play some huge festivals but deep down my favorite shows are the small intimate ones where I can really connect with the crowd. I’m sure my fellow DJ friends can agree with that statement which is how I was able to convince most of them to stop by the Nook and bring a USB stick to jam.
I have the worst memory but I’m sitting here thinking about all the special guests we’ve had. Here’s my attempt at listing them lol. Flosstradamus, ILoveMakonnen, Bro Safari, Antiserum, Gladiator, Loudpvck, Crichy Crich, Champagne Drip, K Theory, Tomsize, Willy Joy, 12th Planet, San Holo, Valentino Khan, Bird Peterson, AFK, Styles & Complete, Zeale, GBuck, + all the local artists and friends we’ve had. All of them together sound like a huge festival lineup (Homie Fest 2016) yet they’ve all played here in Austin for FREE.
Here’s where the explaining begins…
After multiple tickets from the fire marshal as well as sound complaints from The Westin (which was built directly behind The Nook in the last year) we had no other choice but to move the night to Vulcan. It was also the fact that we had two huge special guests in the span of a few weeks (Snails & Getter).
As much as we all love Vulcan for it’s incredible sound and amazing lighting rig it’s way too big to contain a free party every week. The fact that it’s a hard ticketed venue artists themselves lose out on the Austin experience because their booking agents get super pissed that they’ve played a free show at a place they can essentially sell tickets and make a good money at. It takes them out of the Austin market completely by not allowing promoters to book them. These are the politics of the scene but it makes total sense.
Now that The Nook is back on it’s feet after having it’s sound permit temporarily suspended we were ready to move back to our home. But as it turns out The Nook is now the only venue in the downtown district with a sound ordinance that restricts their volume to an even lower level than normal on weekdays. Basically there’s not nearly enough BASS for the music we are trying to play.
If you’ve known me long enough you’d know that the origins of this party span about 6 years ago from San Antonio, TX where I started my first weekly. I have amazing friends who want to keep this party going and we are working hard while planning our next moves. Stay tuned because we’re just getting started and I’m honestly more excited than ever about what the future holds. Thanks for all the memories ATX fam… many more to come! :P"
SO this is what we're going to do about it:
We're opening the floor for discussion here. We want this machine back up and running in no time and we're confident that with suggestions from our readers we can explore some new options.
If you are from Austin or near Austin and you know of a small intimate venue that could host LIFTED, comment and let us know!
In the meantime, you can get on Facebook, LIKE Slice Gang and LIFTED ATX, and keep up with news on the matter and be alerted as soon as they're back!
