Twenty One Pilots, a band consisting of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, initially broke out with their first album Twenty One Pilots in 2009. It is hard to simplify this band into just one genre because they are so diverse. They are alternative rappers with a tinge of electric poetry. They have since had two more albums that consisted with hits like ‘’Car Radio’’ and “House of Gold’’. Their most recent album Blurryface though, has so far proven to be their most successful one yet.
To fully understand what artists are trying to convey, it is necessary to not only hear the album but to also understand the lyrics. What I’ve realised after listening to it was that their most popular songs tend to vary from the rest of the tracks. ‘’Stressed Out’’ has been a chart topper and tends to take on a more ‘pop’ vibe while most of the others stick to an EDM sense. Also, some of the more unpopular songs refer to deeper meanings within the words than just what is on the surface. One of my personal favorites would be “Tear in my Heart” or “Ride”, both of which have the kind of hard-hitting lyrics that make you say ‘oh that was deep’. Though, the variations between hit songs and average tracks isn’t something new, and it tends to be the typical issue with artists that are trying to break out onto the scene. Whether they are trying to venture from their tradition genres and try something different or if it is to conform to what is in popular demand could be up for discussion.
